Love that Demands our All

Love not the world
1 John 2:15 (KJV)

Love it not, and yet love it. Love it with the love of Him who gave His Son to die for it. Love it with the love of Him who shed His blood for it. Love it with the love of angels, who rejoice in its conversion. Love it to do it good, giving  your tears to its sufferings, your pity to its sorrows, your wealth to its wants, your prayers to its miseries, and to its fields of charity, and philanthropy, and Christian piety, your powers and hours of labor. You cannot live without affecting it, or being affected by it. You will make the world better, or it will make you worse.
God help you by His grace and Holy Spirit so to live in the world as to live above it, and look beyond it; and so to love it that when you leave it, you may leave it better than you found it. –Guthrie

Sex, Love and Kids

Sex, Love & Kids:

Three Idols that have never Changed

An old French saying states that “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” Is this statement true, or just a concoction of someone’s imagination? Well, to start off examining that question, I recall a verse in the Bible book of Ecclesiastes that says that nothing new happens under the sun. Let’s examine three areas that mankind continues to be the same even though things have changed over centuries of time. Those areas are Sex, Money, and Child Sacrifice.

First let’s take a look at sex. The ancient Israelites worshiped a god of sex called Baal. As they did so they went through perverted rituals of prostitution and the vulgarity of practicing mass prostitution parties. Today, we see the same thing happening in the form of pornography, prostitution, human trafficking, rape, and pedophilia. Perverted forms of sex are any sexual activity that takes place outside of marriage between a man and a woman. Today modern peoples such as the United States and England who are considered “civilized” are enamored by the same lust for sex as the ancient Israelites. Looks like things haven’t changed to much.

Second I want to show you the god of Mammon or as we will better understand, money. Again we see the ancient Israelites living life and trying to have a good time. They end up catching the glimmer of gold and all that it can buy. Their ancient lust for material items led to another display of lust which would eventually lead to their destruction. We read in the Bible (Nehemiah and elsewhere) of the Israelites lending money and coning each other as well as the excessive taxation of kings or foreign authorities to keep their pomp and luxurious lifestyles afloat.

Third let’s look at the most devastating of the Israelites false gods: the god of child sacrifice. The children of Israel used to offer their children on the arms of a statue-god named Molech. As they did so, they displayed their lack of dignity for the sacredness of life and utterly destroyed the future of their nation by killing them off in this perverted form of Genocide. Today, we see the same icon of child killing across the most “civilized” nations of the world. It is called abortion. The several types of horrendous procedures range from cutting a child in the womb into tiny pieces and suctioning them out to giving birth to the child and stabbing it in the back of the head with scissors. Are we really any different than Israel? We are destroying the future for what—a few more years until we’re ready to take care of a child? Or perhaps we want a career or just don’t want the trouble of taking care of another life. Wasn’t Israel this way? We have some idols, but maybe they are not made of stone or wood.

Three examples: the Israelite idols of Money, Sex, and Child-Sacrifice prove true in modern society too. The book of Ecclesiastes was right, nothing new happens under the sun and that old French saying of “the more things change, the more they stay the same,” well that one is true as well. People chase money, the intrigue of sex and convenience of child-sacrifice to appease some idol in their own life. While the idol may not be made of wood or stone, it certainly exists in the form of an ideology, philosophy, or opinion. We are, essentially, the same despite the ages.

Love

Love

This chapter comes from my book, Courtship Study: Dating or Courtship….Which is Biblical!

“either [by] complete abstinence or unmitigated monogamy…..we  have been closing up the way of escape. We have done this through the poets and novelists by persuading humans that a curious, and usually short-lived, experience which they call ‘being in love’ is the only respectable ground for marriage; that marriage can, and ought to, render this excitement permanent; and that a marriage which does not do so is no longer binding. This idea is our parody of the idea that came from the Enemy…. You can thus get the humans to accept as rhetorical eulogies of ‘being in love’ what were in fact plain descriptions of sexual intercourse. The truth is that whenever a man lies with a woman, there, whether they like it or not, a transcendental relation is set up between them which must be eternally enjoyed or eternally endured. From the true statement that this transcendental relation was intended to produce, and, if obediently entered into, too often will produce, affection and the family, humans can be made to infer the false belief that the blend of affection, fear, and desire which they call ‘being in love’ is the only thing that makes a marriage either happy or holy.”

The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis

True Love = Commitment

As the quote by C.S. Lewis describes the importance of love: sexual expression is not merely “being in love.” Sexual union unites a man and a woman in a Heavenly design: marriage. Two souls become one. Aged men and women, as you may notice around your church or neighborhood, can finish each other’s sentences and know what each other are thinking. They even wait patiently, sometimes with a smile as they listen to their beloved speak. Do not fall prey to emotion alone. Emotion is great and we know that sex feels great because God created it for not only procreation, but for enjoyment and pleasure between a husband and wife in marriage. But Satan seeks to get us to take bites “of the forbidden fruit” when in reality, the fruit is only forbidden until marriage because of how delightful it tastes. If we partake of it too early, we will not be able to control ourselves properly. We need the accountability within marriage and the commitment to truly enjoy the passion.

You can partake of sex without ever engaging in the physical act. Why do you think so many are addicted to porn? Why do so many young girls giggle over the latest boy band? Are they merely “in love” or are they “in love with the emotional feelings of ‘being in love’”? Guys are no different, we make a lot more decisions on feeling than some may realize. The difference is that women primarily desire to have intimate and exciting feelings, whereas, most men long for the pleasure of physical contact. Women are “turned on” by touch. That is why the Scripture tells us to be careful:

It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

1 Corinthians 7:1-2 (KJV)

We must guard our emotions—that is largely what this book is about. Far too often, dating has the goal of simply getting the feeling of “being in love.” And once that feeling is over—ya, you know what happens: the couple breaks up and after a while probably start seeing other people and the same things happens again. This kind of consumerism in intimacy prepares people for divorce. By the way, dating was not around until the creation of the automobile. Before then, courtship was expected. If a young man kept coming to a young lady’s house to talk, people expected them to get married. Is that legalistic or overkill? No, it is very wise.

Do not get involved with the opposite sex in “a relationship” until you are absolutely ready to commit. To determine if you are ready, you both need the blessing of your parents. True love commits—it stays through the thick and the thin. It takes care of each other when one of you has bad breath or is spilling your guts out because of the stomach flu: it’s not a pretty picture but depicts true love for another. True love sacrifices yourself and defers to the other’s needs and preferences in marriage.

Look at how God describes love (God does not describe love as an emotion, but as a committed decision):

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth 1 Corinth-ians 13:1-8 (KJV), emphasis added

Until and when marital love comes our way (if it is the Lord’s will for us), we are to treat the opposite sex in the following way:

Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;  The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

1 Timothy 5:1-2 (KJV)

If you’re a woman, respect other young men as if they were your brother and older men as if they were your father. If you’re a man, treat younger women as if they were your sister and older women as if they were your mother. If we practiced this one thing, we would maintain purity and the whole dilemma of “relationships” in our culture would be gone.

Until God opens the door for marriage, we are to wait patiently: not with longing hearts pining away for marriage and dwelling on it from day to day, but rather about our Father’s business: serving the Lord, close to members of the Family of God in a local church, redeeming the time through our work, praying for our future spouse to be a Biblical man of character or a Biblical woman of virtue, and preparing for future marriage by pursuing wisdom through having the Holy Spirit teach us as we read the Word of God (STOP AND READ: 1 John 2:27), listening to those older than us to mine their wisdom, and focusing our hearts on the Lord first and foremost; for if we place Christ first, then He will provide everything we need in His perfect timing as a blessing; not as an anxiously awaited necessity (Matthew 6, 6:33)

True Love

True Love

Read 1 Corinthians 13.

The following is a definition came to me one day during school. I had been thinking about love and how to describe what it was to a group of young men I was sharing with on lust the previous week. You see, we had talked a lot about what lust was, but I hit a roadblock on how to describe love. Thus, as I was doing some homework or something one day, I had an idea and grabbing a piece of paper and a pen this “definition” is what came out of it. May those who read be given some insight into what Love is and don’t give me credit—give the credit to Jesus who by His gift of the Holy Spirit has taught me these things.

Definition of Love :

Love cannot be adequately defined by a modern dictionary or Hollywood, it is not an emotion or bubbly feeling, but rather, a patient, sacrificial person whom God created to be of the utmost importance in our Christian lives.

It is an action founded in Christ, of whom our perfected example lays. It overlooks age, race, color, and social and economic standings. It corrects, reaches, instructs, teaches, and touches the very soul. It looks past hate and pride – of which pride is forth most its enemy; since every sin somehow is stemmed from that wicked root.

Love is thereby adequately defined by 1 Corinthians 13 which declares Love to be patient, merciful; it is an action of sorts, the opposite of hate, and above all the Divine Nature of Providence and starkly, uncompromisingly opposite to lust, hate, emotion, and pleasure – which almost invariably stem from pride. [Note for clarity: when emotion and pleasure are mentioned to stem from pride, it is referring to the emotional pleasure of those who partake of sex outside of God’s condition of marriage because they claim that they were “so in love” that they had to express it in that way.]

Love is simply the absence of pride resulting in an “others’ oriented” mindset, seated upon Christ and worked out with healthy fear and trembling (which is due to the fact that Love is our true calling).

Side note:

Humility, Contentment, and Affection all stem from this ‘odd’ four letter word – that is, L-O-V-E.

Love – you can’t spend enough time on this topic

Love – you can’t spend enough time on this topic

A changed (transformed) life displays Christ’s love. His love is a firm love, yet a merciful, forgiving and non-compromising love.

Love is the key to forgiveness and true love of God and others fulfills all the Commandments.

Read John 3:16-17 and all of 1 John.

Love

Love

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

1 Corinthians 13:13 NKJV

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;  does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.  For we know in part and we prophesy in part.  But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.  For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:4-13 KJV

Remember: Your first love

Remember: Your first love

A man from my church took some time to give me this piece of advice: remember your first love. He wasn’t talking about a young woman who would become my wife, he was talking about Christ. He told me to persevere—that if I stumble and fall to get back up, not to fall down and stay down, and to do everything I can not to fall; yet to get up if I do. He related these things to the story of Marry and Martha. He told me that I must remember to sit and listen to Jesus and not always be “busy” like Martha. Martha was so busy that she cried out to God to have Marry help her, but she was supposed to sit and listen by putting everything else aside.

How can you remember your first love today?

Will You Put Your Trust in God 1st or Others 1st?

Will You Put Your Trust in God 1st or Others 1st?

I see a big question vying for supremacy in the hearts and lives of churches, families and individuals today in America. It’s a question that may be a bit confusing at first glance—Will you put your trust in God 1st or others 1st? Jesus taught us the golden rule which is to love others as we love ourselves, but today so many churches and individuals are putting others and their needs first instead of second. Let me explain. Jesus said that there are two commands that all the Law and the Prophets hand on: #1 Love God 1st with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and #2 Love others as yourself.

Today, the focus of so many is how to reach, reach, reach more people. It is about getting a higher number of people involved in an effort to serve them inside programs and systems. Those who do this are bending over backwards, working themselves ragged, and rarely take any time to slow down and rest. But the truth is that Jesus rested. He even walked away from crowds that wanted Him to do miracles, sent His disciples away, and went to a solitary place to commune with His Father.

The Bible also tells us that Jesus only did the will of His Father (John 6:38). Jesus never did anything that He wanted to do, but submitted every action to His Father. While we are imperfect, we still must aim for that standard and by God’s grace may we begin applying it on a consistent basis.

Although we usually don’t think of it this way, putting others first is a form of idolatry. Anything ahead of our relationship with the Lord is idolatry. This is a challenging lesson that I am learning as well, but if I put any ministry, any activity, any endeavor, any person, anything before God, I am sinning.

The core of the false teaching of seeker friendliness is putting other people and their needs ahead of a personal relationship with God. Thus, all that is built is programs and outreaches based on needs—another social gospel—not God’s Kingdom. God’s Kingdom is one that begins in the heart of a man and then works itself into His life, transforming Him into a new creation as the seed of Almighty God’s Spirit blooms and grows as it is fed with the living nutrients and water of Jesus Christ (the Word).

Do You Remember to Love?

Do You Remember to Love?

God is love (1 John 4:8). But this love is much deeper than just a good feeling; likewise, it is not a physical or emotional concept, but rather a spiritual. Can you grasp that? Do you understand that? It is an amazing concept! God keeps us on track: He disciplines and waits for us because He loves us; He administers justice and refuses to forsake us in our hour of darkest need; He gives us peace and joy. He is Holy. He is Awesome. He is God. All these and more are marks of God’s character. Please, REMEMBER that God is love, but I also challenge you to go a step farther than just knowing that and to live a loving life with the Holy Spirit as your Counselor and Guide (1 Cor.13, Gal. 5).

V  Take some time in a still and quiet place to meditate about what God’s love really is and how you can share it.

True Beauty

True Beauty

Read: 1 Corinthians 13.

True beauty is Christ’s character.

Let’s take a look at an insightful Scripture passage from 1 Peter:

Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.  Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.  For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.   1 Peter 3:1-6 NKJV

There it is in black and white: the Bible tells women how to make themselves internally beautiful; and this internal beauty then radiates to the outside in the form of her character. Perhaps this is why Isaac’s wife Rebekah was called beautiful (Gen. 24:16, 29:17). Scripture lets us know that not only was Rebekah physically beautiful, but she had a beautiful character because she volunteered to water the camels of a foreigner for free (Gen. 24).

Another Angle

Many people focus on the external “beauty” that they see on TV, but the beauty described in this passage is so much more valuable than a “perfect body,” and quite frankly, will benefit a man much, much more. I have brought up the first Peter 3 passage aforementioned during a Bible study. I said, “Who wants to know how to make themselves beautiful, because the Bible has the answer?” The girls in the room seemed to perk up and listen inventively. . . . The answer that they got may not have been what they were looking for, but it was a truth that all need to realize contained in 1 Peter 3:1-6 and 1 Corinthians 13: True beauty is having the character of Christ, not the sexiest body.

What the Law of Love means…in Jesus own words

What the Law of Love means…in Jesus own words

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. 30  Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. 37  Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. 39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. 41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. 43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. 46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

True Love = Commitment

“[M]y dear son and daughter, you need not consider praying for a pious spouse a disgrace. For you do not consider it a disgrace to ask God to give you a sound hand or leg. . . .Now a pious spouse is as necessary as a sound hand or leg.

Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

The following song from Fireproof may be encouraging to you, I know it has been to me:

While I’m Waiting lyrics

I'm waiting
I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am hopeful
I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it is painful
But patiently, I will wait

I will move ahead, bold and confident
Taking every step in obedience
While I'm waiting
I will serve You
While I'm waiting
I will worship
While I'm waiting
I will not faint
I'll be running the race
Even while I wait

I'm waiting
I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am peaceful
I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it's not easy
But faithfully, I will wait
Yes, I will wait
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting
I will serve you while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting on You, Lord
