10 And Ezekias begat Manasses;
Manasseh
was likely the most wicked king of all of Israel’s kings. He became king at 12
and spread abomination and idolatry throughout all of Israel. At the end of his
life, Manasseh realizes his wrong and that the Lord is God; however, nothing
changes in Israel.
and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon
begat Josias;
Then we see Josiah who became king at 8 and he
did what was right in the eyes of the Lord throughout his life. He was the last
godly king.
11 And Josias begat Jechonias and
his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: 12 And
after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel
begat Zorobabel; 13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and
Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; 14 And
Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; 15 And
Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; 16 And
Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called
Christ.
We then see Mary. She was the husband of Joseph
and the mother of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Mary was known as a
virtuous young woman and it is important to note that the Lord chose her, a
virtuous woman, as the vessel to carry his son.
17 So all the generations from
Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the
carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the
carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
In short, Christ’s lineage is one of
redemption. Sexual sin is in the family history, yet so is repentance and
wholehearted seeking of the Lord.
