The Commands, Teachings, and Life of our Lord Jesus Christ: Matthew 1:20-25

But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

God silenced Joseph’s doubts and assured him that Mary was still indeed a very virtuous woman who had not committed adultery, but submitted herself to God to be the vessel through which Christ was to be carried and born. Notice how God quotes Scripture by saying that one of the prophets of the Old Testament declared that a virgin would have a son and that her son would be Emmanuel—God with us! God, assures us of truth by His written Word.

The purpose of why Jesus came is summed up very in his name, Jesus, which is the same as Joshua in Hebrew and means a savior or a deliver. Jesus was coming to save His people their sins!

What did Joseph do with all this information from God? He got up and obeyed. The Bible shows Joseph’s love for God with the evidence that he immediately obeyed. He woke up and did as the Angel of the Lord said: he took Mary as his wife. However, he did not “know her,” that is, he did not sleep with his wife until after she had brought for Jesus out of respect and reverence for God who physically dwelt within her at that time.
