The Crucifixion

(Selected Scriptural accounts: Matt. 26-28, Mark 14-16, Luke 22-24, & John 17-20)

The following is the author’s paraphrase of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ:

The only perfect man, Jesus, is willingly being beaten. They (the Roman soldiers) smack him with sticks and they yank out his beard . . . . Then they spit in his face. The Christ screams in agony! Inside, He must be constantly saying, “Not my will but yours be done, Father!” Then the whip! Crack!!! Smack!!! Jesus’ flesh is being ripped to shreds! And after his brutal whipping, the soldiers shove a crown of thorns into his skull.

Aaaaaaahhhhhh!!!! He screams.

This afflicted man is the Messiah, Christ the King! And as if His beating was not enough, they continued:

“Ha! Ha!” mock the soldiers. They now make Jesus, God in the form of a man, who has just been beaten, scourged, spit upon, and his back ripped to shreds; carry His cross to Golgotha. As Jesus stumbles, weakened by His beatings, the soldiers grab a business man from the crowd and force him to help Jesus carry the cross. . . slowly, they go on . . . . when they make it to the hill where Christ will be crucified, they take His cross and assemble it. Then . . . . BANG!!! Can you hear it? The soldiers drive nails through Christ’s feet and hands. Blood shoots out of Christ hands as the nails are driven through His flesh. Then the soldiers hoist up the cross, with the freshly nailed Messiah attached, and drop it into a hole so that Jesus will slowly die vertically, for all to see.

As Christ hangs on that tree, that cross, that piece of wood that He created in the beginning, He is forsaken by His Father because of your sin that He bore. The spotless lamb, Jesus, took the punishment for every sin ever committed! Christ now bearing the weight of all sin of the murder, the rapist, the serial killer, the guy who made a mistake, the unwed dad, the greatest thief, the adulterer, the adulteress, the luster, the conformer, the compromiser, the Scripture-twister, the drunkard, the mocker, the scoffer, the fornicator, the pervert, the self-righteous, the heartless one, the one disobedient to his parents, the woman who had an abortion, the doctor that “performed” the abortion, the false witness, the hypocrite, the liar – do you want me to go on? . . . . He died for You!

Christ died for you. And the sin of you and I nailed CHRIST to that tree: everyone, even the sweetest people, rejected Him—nailing Him there—yet He died for them all while they were still sinners who hated Him. Because He died in your place, bearing the punishment for all sin, you can be forgiven from all your sins. All you have to do is accept the gift of eternal salvation that Christ offers you. He DIED for YOU.

Here’s how to accept His sacrifice:

That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." Romans 10:9-11 NIV

Rest assured that you are now forgiven:If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 NIV

Now, live for the Lamb’s Glory! Seek Him through prayer, godly counsel, and His Word and your relationship with Him will grow.

Reward

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 NIV

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Luke 12:34 NIV

Where is your treasure? (Hint: It’s where your heart is.)

If you struggle on this issue, and we all do at one time or another, I encourage you to get a hold of a copy or read online (http://www.fullbooks.com/The-Mansion.html) the short story, The Mansion, by Henry Van Dyke. It depicts the meaning of this verse very well.

Thought Life—The Determiner of Who You Are

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.” Proverbs 23:7 KJV

Our thought life is really important and, gentlemen, you especially have to fight to keep this area submissive to Christ, trust me I know. And shepherds, your mind is the first place that I think the Enemy is going to try to get you to stumble.

In our culture today lust is the center of many of the relationships, purchases, and, unfortunately, entertainment. But what is lust? It is something that you desire strongly yet is contrary to the Bible and God. In other words, it is the sinful desire to have something that God says is not for you. Let me give you an example, if a young man grows up accepting what the world tells him is right about relationships, then he will likely indulge in dating the “hot girl” that catches his eye. Similarly, watching a large number of movies that he should not watch will strengthen his susceptibility to the temptation to “sneak-a-peek” at some porn or to have sex numerous times out of wedlock because he feels like it, but is this mindset right?

We think about a lot of things before we do them. When you are all alone what do you think about or what do are you tempted to do? What are the things you have thought about that you would hate other people to know and, more importantly, would you confess them to Jesus’ holy face? Would you “feel good” having Jesus watching as you think the about the things that you do? Or would you feel ashamed knowing that Jesus is watching as you continually think about, constantly dwell on, meditate on some sin? The truth is that He is always watching so please don’t grieve Him.

“Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'” Matthew 22:37 NIV

“The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand;” Psalm 121:5 NIV

“Whenever I would heal Israel, the sins of Ephraim are exposed and the crimes of Samaria revealed. They practice deceit, thieves break into houses, bandits rob in the streets; but they do not realize that I remember all their evil deeds. Their sins engulf them; they are always before me. ‘They delight the king with their wickedness, the princes with their lies. They are all adulterers, burning like an oven whose fire the baker need not stir from the kneading of the dough till it rises. On the day of the festival of our king the princes become inflamed with wine, band he joins hands with the mockers. Their hearts are like an oven; they approach him with intrigue. Their passion smolders all night; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire. All of them are hot as an oven; they devour their rulers. All their kings fall, and none of them calls on me.” Hosea 7:1-7 NIV

Take an honest, meditative look at your thought life, whether you are young or old, male or female, and then apply the following verse: “. . . take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV).

Matthew 18:4 NIV

“Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

For today, ponder this one Scripture and journal what the Holy Spirit shows you about “becoming” like a child.

Thought 104

Matthew 27:50-53 NIV

“And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.”

Does this verse amaze you or what? If it doesn’t please read it again! When Jesus died tombs BROKE OPEN, but that wasn’t the only amazing part, holy people WERE RAISED FROM THE DEAD!  If this Scripture is not a representation of miracles then I don’t know what is. Ever sense God allowed me to “catch” this verse while I was reading; I have had a sense of awe when I think about how my Lord’s death literally set other people free from death. Likewise, we are set free when Christ comes into us and an entire campaign is begun by the Holy Spirit to conform us to the image of Christ and to destroy our flesh by sacrificing it on the cross.

In addition, these dead people who were miraculously raised from the dead “…WENT INTO THE HOLY CITY AND APPEARED TO MANY PEOPLE.” How long do you think you would have lasted talking with somebody that had been dead for who knows how long?! What about just looking at them?!

Today, think about the greatness of our God! Think of what Jesus’ sacrifice did for us and for others, and don’t forget the POWER of His death—the power of Jesus’ death is amazing!

The Body

Do you know how amazing your body is?

Your heart and brain are amazingly complex and it is a miracle that so few errors occur in these important control centers of the body each day.

Do you want to be amazed about order and detail in the universe?

Look at the cell. Every time I study it, especially when I see video presentations of the cell, I am amazed at the design of my Creator and how much He cares for me. Likewise, watching a video on the magnitude of the stars in relation to the size of earth will cause you to stand in awe of the Lord Almighty.

Do some study about the amazing human body today. As you learn, be in awe of God.

Thought 102

Possessions vs. Possession

I can have all the stuff in the world and yet not have peace or have the one thing that truly, truly matters: knowing Jesus Christ.

I originally accepted Christ because I did not want to go to Hell. I did not accept Him out of love for what He had done, but because He was my only way out. Over time, thankfully, the Lord taught me more and more how much that He loved me and as He did so I began to love the Lord for His character, but it took a long time until I could honestly say that I loved Jesus. Praise be to God that He did not give up on me because I did not originally accept Him in love and yet He still worked on me! I do not want to lose my relationship with Christ, and everything else in my life pales in significance; any goal or achievement does not matter eternally, only knowing Him matters.

Read Philippians 3:12-21.

Please think about this: have you been putting your faith and trust in possessions or the possession, that is, Jesus Christ?

Thought 101

What is a Never Ending Song to God?

What is a Never Ending Song to God? Appropriately, Jack, a fictional character, found what the answer was after praying and reading his Bible. He determined that a never ending song of worship was his life. The song was being written with every choice he made, and there were ups and downs in the melody; from his birth to his death a song was being written by the best record producer ever – God.

I have sung unto the Lord on many occasions, but that isn’t real worship. Yes, I can pour out my heart to God in song, but true worship is living a life of worship. This is comprised of trying to think like Jesus thinks, following the Holy Spirit, and just plain putting into practice what you know is the truth of God’s Word. Are you really worshipping God with the never ending song of your life?

Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language defines worship as:

1.      To honor with extravagant love and extreme submission ; as a lover. (Boldness added)

Think about that definition . . . . do you love God extravagantly? Are you extremely submissive to the Lord? . . . . Do you need to repent? Spend some time in His presence.

Should I Base My Decisions on How I Feel?

Should I base my decisions on how I feel? The answer is, no. Are your emotions ever wrong? I mean do you ever feel like you need to take revenge even though vengeance is the Lord’s? We know from experience that our emotions are not always right because they do not guide us to the right things all the time, they definitely are not foolproof. The world has a little saying about your emotions; it is “follow your heart!” but is this Biblically true? Should you base your decisions on your hearts’ desire? Let’s see what Scripture says:

“Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.”  Proverbs 23:19 NIV

“Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21 NIV

“But they will reply, 'It's no use. We will continue with our own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.'”  Jeremiah 18:12 NIV

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Luke 12:34 NIV

These Scriptures are just a small taste of the many that the Bible contains on the heart. Do you have a pure or evil heart? You can know because it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. The point that I want you to grasp is this: we cannot look within ourselves, our hearts, to determine what is right and true.

Our culture believes that truth is relative, in other words, that truth is based on what you believe or what you think in your head is true. But that is not the truth, it is a lie! We have lots of plans that we set in our hearts, but God decides whether or not they will come to fruition. We can struggle against God’s will and commit the heinous acts that some hearts desire like fornication, hate, adultery, and hypocrisy all because we follow what our hearts. Do you see the danger in following your heart?!

Please take a moment and think about this before you go on with your day: it is important to realize the folly of following your sinful heart; otherwise, you will believe one of the lies that will bind you down and depress you—all because you didn’t apply the Bible’s warnings of following your heart to your life!

Emotion is often not a ‘soul prodding’ from the Holy Spirit.

I said to her

By: Ryan Marks

[A fictional account of one man’s story with his wife.]

Dearest one, the little one within you is about to die.

Only two options have we: one to kill the unborn babe, the other to risk thee.

I love thee second only to God.

I love thee more than this child . . . this amazing gift from above.

But I say to you now, “Fare thee well.” . . . .

For though I love your life, I will not sign . . . I will not sign . . .

The Death Warrant of our precious Child.

“Fare thee well” . . . .  “Fare thee well” . . . .

My heart is sad, but my soul is glad, for I shall see thee again.

Our child may survive or may be with you very soon.

“Fare thee well” . . . .  “Fare thee well” . . . .

The would-be executioner comes again pleading,

“If only we destroy the child your wife will live and be with thee!!”

“Fare thee well” . . . . “Fare thee well” . . . .

“O Lord, my soul longs to be with You, so that this test would not take place. But YEA, though I walk through the shadow of my dearest’s death to THEE I shall still loyal be. Thy Word is clear, murder tis’ sin and how much more that of my own children! Hold me in your arms O Lord, her breath is growing faint. . .”

“Fare thee well” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

A Girl! They say! I laugh then cry for my dearest breath has just passed away.

I stayed true to Him . . . .

I obeyed the hardest thing that a man can ever endure –even harder than his own death. . . .

Yet that crime – abortion, God whispers to me can be forgiven. . . .

Though I have not transgressed, my soul within me now is given A MISSION.

And it shall expand as many a man reads this simple composition.

Thought 97

For the Timothy’s (the Youths of the Way)

Be on your knees, not stuck in your personal opinion

We have opinions on everything from who should be president to what kind of food should be eaten by ourselves and by others. Young adults, “teens,” we need to reverse the mindset of our selfish opinions. Yes, I know it will be hard because I am very opinionated in flesh, but did you ever think that maybe God needs to break our opinionated lifestyle so that we can be more filled with Him? Will we put the meaningless issues like what flavor of gum we should eat behind us and strain toward what really matters: a relationship with Christ and unified fellowship with other believers? Or as Paul says, will we preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified (1 Cor. 2:2)?

We need to voice God’s Truth and be careful about voicing our fleshly opinions. This will not be easy because if we are shackled by a stronghold of opinionated mindsets.

You might be dead set against a particular somebody running for president (like me), but instead of bad mouthing that person, why not be a model of Jesus and go to your knees instead of harshly proclaiming your opinion? Amen!

Thought 96

The Birth of an Idea

Have you ever had crazy ideas that are centered on God? How can they be ‘crazy’ when they are centered on God? Is it because you aren’t that type of person? Does it seem impossible? WELL I HAVE GOOD NEWS FOR YOU: “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”  (Matthew 19:26 NIV). Nothing is impossible with God! That’s easy to say that, right? But do you really believe it? And more importantly, do you believe it enough to live it?

I have had some crazy ideas pop into my head sometimes, like founding a Christian cell phone company, starting a youth-centered program, starting a blog, teaching a class, and leading a teen romance seminar (based on the Bible). I have not done every crazy idea that pops into my head, because some are just that, plain crazy and pointless; but, I have learned that if I keep my mind and heart open to God, He will direct me to which of those crazy ideas I should attempt, that is, which ones that He has implanted in my mind. I do not always put my ideas into motion right away. More often, I file it away and don’t even look at till months later during a season of review and remembrance.

For example, I had the idea about starting Devo Blast, a devotional email, for about a year before I actually did it. In process of musing over whether to or not to run with a new idea, I have had to say things to myself like, “ok, when the time is right, I’ll do it, but I just don’t have the peace about it right now and I am going to let God’s peace be my umpire. However, I do believe that God is going to bless it when the time comes.”

I have struggled with wanting to put into motion a plan to teach young men about Biblical manhood for a long time; and I didn’t get the opportunity that I desired. Until one day after co-teaching a class at a homeschool group—I was asked if there was anything that I wanted to teach on for the next upcoming school year. Well, I was kind of interested in teaching a Bible class, but I did not get the “thumbs up” from my mom, so I put the question behind me and just left it in the hands of God. If it was His will, He would make a way. Later on my mom asked me if I wanted to teach something at the homeschool group. After thinking for a little while (like five minutes), I said that I wanted to teach a class on Biblical manhood. In short, the idea was approved. Right now (February 2010), I am teaching that class. Six young men have been learning about Biblical manhood for three sessions now, and the Holy Spirit has come in a unique way. I have done hardly any preparation other than writing the curriculum and yet God makes our one hour sessions to seem so long and become so fruitful. It’s like He is in the room directing us, praise God! There might not be a ton of people in the class, and my speech might not be flawless, but God is working in them and in me; and more importantly He opened the door to me so that I could accomplish the crazy idea that He had given me. Will you take a risk on your God-centered, God-given idea if God opens the door?

The principle we are delving into today does not have to be applied on a huge level. As I was editing this, another idea popped into my mind, and I am trusting that that idea is from the Holy Spirit and someone reading needs it. Look over this list that I put together at the beginning of 2010 as the year’s vision for a ministry I was in; you might say that this was my “heartbeat for God” that year. As you read allow the Holy Spirit to show you how your simple ideas (and desires) can come to pass when you follow Him. Also, please note that my comments to whether or not those goals were accomplished are in BOLD.

2010 Plan for Royal Rangers at Outpost 108

-Adventure & Expedition Groups-

(my personal goals/aspirations for our group)

#1 To spiritually prepare my peers for the life they will soon live on their own (the devotions God led me to share have impacted young men, but the preparation for their future life will depend on their application of God’s Word.)

#2 To assist other Rangers’ in choosing GREEN or SILVER merits of interest to do on their own. (It happened.)

#3 To teach every Gold merit that I can to help them toward their Gold Medal of Achievement. [I was able to teach quite a few of the harder merits (gold) that year, the amount of merits that my Rangers groups earned was phenomenal, God certainly had a hand in it!]

#4 Maybe start a Bible study outside of Royal Rangers with the same group? (I did end up starting a Bible study, in June of 2010 when God gave me the “thumbs up,” and, yes, some of the young men from Royal Rangers have attended, but God primarily brought along a different group.)

#5 To develop leaders for the future and present (The young men have grown spiritually. One is less fearful of public speaking; another feels called into the ministry, and as a result, is becoming much bolder and trusting in God; and others have been touched in ways that I not even heard about.)

#6 To try to work with some Youth guys to be part of our Royal Rangers activities/Sunday school class (This became evident during the last part of the year when I began planning [with the Student Ministries Pastor] a hike that would include both Rangers and the “Youth” guys at my church; however, none of the Rangers showed up for the hike.)

#7 That devotions (Wednesdays/campouts) equip individuals in real life (As much as it was up to me, yes.)

#8 Have others give me info. what would they like to learn through our devotions and what merits kind(s) would they be interested in? (This one was accomplished, but on a much smaller scale than I was hoping for.)

#9 Make class interesting and fun! [Get feedback] (Check.)

#10 Incorporate others skills (i.e. writing, computer skills, planning, and craftsmanship) into our personal class’s ministry. (This did not really take place, although I did discuss and preach about developing it.)

#11 Personally train a assistant(s) to lead merits. (Yes, others have been prepared.)

I have included this personal goal list to encourage you. Sometimes my goals and God-given passion(s) succeeded and other times they did not. But I still learned from trying all of them. Not everything I or you attempt will be an instant success; but even if we fall flat on our faces, we will have gained the experience and we can share that with others one day. By sharing our failures and successes, we can help others, as Kevin Swanson says, “to stand on our shoulders and go on to even greater things for the glory of God.” I believe that the young men that I am investing my time in now, will surpass me in many other areas of life later on down the road. Yes, I have the privilege of teaching the Word to those who may be future pilots, businessmen, lawyers, or doctors. I will not go down half of the paths that they will; but maybe, just maybe, they will be able to take a step on top of my shoulders as I teach and serve them now, that they may follow God in ways that I never can. For example, the people that one of these young men could reach as a businessman, I can never reach in ministry or writing. We all have a place and I do not want to be jealous or envious of them as those I have invested in go on do greater things than I have; instead, I want to cheer them on and say, “Good job, man of God!”

Remember to commit your goals to God.

    Thought 95

Test the Preacher’s Sermons

Test the sermons you hear with God’s Word. Paul commended the Bereans for diligently testing the preaching they heard with the Scriptures (Acts 17:10-12). Please, do not believe everything preachers and “Christians” tell you; instead, filter EVERYTHING through the spiritual lenses of Holy Spirit and the eternal truth of the Bible; and yes, even filter what your minister tells you. When I listen intently to sermons and seek God’s truth to renew my mind, while being alert to detect things that are not Biblical, I get a whole lot more out of listening to a sermon. Now I don’t mean to that you should be condemning, but alert. Personally, I get gems of Spiritual truth that the Holy Spirit spoke through another when I weigh what was said with the Word of God that I know, and one day, God will have me share those gems with others.

Remember that God’s Word is the ultimate authority in your life and that NOTHING men, the government, or even a pastor does or teaches will ever be higher in authority. Therefore, test everything you hear with the Word of God.

Writing Down what God has Done for Us

Writing down what God has done for you will help you to remember and thereby, continue to be thankful. Just as, we need to remember the Scripture and refresh ourselves in it to remember, so we should go back through our journal of what God has done for us, thanking Him and standing in awe of all that He has done for us. This encourages our spirits and keeps us on track in our relationship with the Lord.

V  Have you written down the things that God has done for you? If not, start today.

H1N1: The “Swine” Flu

Not long after the “swine” flu ‘came out’ I became sick. I was afraid that this was it, I am going to die. Anyway, I felt lead to look up strength in the concordance of my Bible and when I did I found a verse (I think that it was in Psalms) that said that God was my strength; right then and there I made the decision to trust that God would carry me through this. I stopped worrying about possibly having the “swine” flue and simply trusted that God would take care of me. And here I am, He was not finished with me yet! The dreams and passions that He had just placed in my heart had not come to fulfillment at that time, and deep down I just knew that He wasn’t finished with me. I cannot describe it, but there are times in life that you just know that you know that you know that something is true and at those times a stillness, a peace from the Almighty comes.

Trust in God Triumphs!

Do you need to trust that God? This does not mean naming something you want and claiming it; rather, trust is a firm belief and humble spirit which asks God to have His will accomplished in a matter. We learn His will as we know Him more and more—we know that He desires to bless us like a Father his children; but we also learn that we go through trying times as discipline, and that we will grow from those times.

In short, our prayers will always be answered, whether sooner or later; either as we wanted or the exact opposite; but God’s will is supreme and we recognize it—that is trusting in God. When our prayers are not answered how we want them to be we need to brush ourselves off and move on: a simple principle, but if we apply it a big change will come.

Scripture Selections for Meditation

Read John 14.

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him."   1 John 5:14-15 NIV

*Please note that we can ask God anything, but when we ask according to His will, God gives it to us. If we ask with a manipulative spirit, God knows that and will not answer our prayer. But how will we know the will of God? By intimately knowing Jesus Christ and to know Him we must spend time with Him.

Little One

(I wrote this during my mothers’ pregnancy with my little sister Erin)

Little one inside the womb, I pray for you. God loves you. Although you enter this world with sin, I will do my best to show you Jesus whose love you should accept. My God, my God, protect this little one; O God, I thank you for this child’s life. Lord, I will take my position of authority in this sibling’s life and the influence I will give all the days of this little one’s life to You. Lord, protect my sibling.

I know not your gender, but I surrender you to God. ONLY GOD GIVES LIFE AND ONLY HE TAKES IT. This wisdom I give you from my small stores: the safest place that you can be, little one, is in the center of God’s will: being in tune with Him through the Spirit. I will teach you the best I can in the few years I have with you at home and I pray that you will enjoy some of things I do.

P.S. If you have blue eyes I’ll be proud.

Answer to Postscript: My sister Erin’s eyes are blue.

My Story Behind the Previous Letter:

When I was growing up I had one little sister, but I wanted a little brother too. On my tenth birthday I prayed that God would give me a little brother. And guess what? By my next birthday I had a little brother. My parents were surprised, because it had been eight years since my sister was born! A year or two after my brother’s birth I began praying to have another little sister. I thought that my brother needed a little sister like I had and I would enjoy another sibling, right? So I prayed again and this time it took a while. My mom became pregnant and the baby passed away in a miscarriage. A second time my mom became pregnant and as she was going through another miscarriage I was trying to have faith. I wanted to believe that child into existence, that everything would be ok and all the signs of death were just mistakes. But I did not get what I prayed for. My mom lost that baby as well. I was broken and for a while a little lost, but God brought me closer to Himself in the end.

By now, five years had passed since my mom had my little brother who I prayed for on my birthday; and my mom became pregnant a third time and had my little sister Erin. She is healthy, there were no problems. God answered my prayer! I have learned something over those hard years: that God answers us, but not always in the way we want or in our timing. Since then, I have prayed for twin brothers and my mom is not very happy with me. She knows that I have prayed twice for siblings and eventually did “get” another brother and sister. I think she has a little fear that my prayer might come true, and I’m pretty sure that her fear is far from what they label Holy Fear. J  Anyway, what prayers has God answered for you? Did you have to wait and were you given exactly what you asked for?
