21 Days of Remembrance:

Should We Demand a Sign to Remember?

Read: Matthew 16:1-4

Jesus taught that asking for a sign was wicked and adulterous. Wow, when Christ uses those words we need to make sure that we are listening! Jesus also states, near the end of the Matthew 16:4, that instead of a miracle, the sign of Jonah will be given in response to the request of a sign from Jesus. What is this sign of Jonah though? Let’s check out Matthew 12:38-45.

Jesus used the sign of Jonah as a figure of speech to describe Himself: in answer to the requests for a sign Jesus would give the ultimate sign with His life. He would die on the cross for the sins of the world and his body would stay in a tomb for three days (just as Jonah was in the well for three days) and then Jesus would rise from the dead, completing His task (much like Jonah, who was spit upon dry land and told to go finish His assignment from God).

Remember not to ask for a sign, but to believe in the ultimate sign that Jesus did for us: dying and rising again, conquering death.
