Thought 181: the Sabbath from Ryan Marks' book series Thoughts

Thought 181

The Sabbath

I am not saying that we have to be legalists. Jesus Himself said that the Sabbath was created for man, not man for the Sabbath (Mark 2:27). In the United States today, we don’t honor the Sabbath—the Lord!—the way that we have previously in our history. I ask you today to consider these verses.

If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath

and from doing as you please on my holy day,

if you call the Sabbath a delight

and the Lord’s holy day honorable,

and if you honor it by not going your own way

and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,

then you will find your joy in the Lord,

and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land

and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.”

The mouth of the Lord has spoken.  Isaiah 58:13-14 (NIV1984)

Go, proclaim this message toward the north:

“‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord,

‘I will frown on you no longer,

for I am merciful,’ declares the Lord,

‘I will not be angry forever.

Only acknowledge your guilt—

you have rebelled against the Lord your God,

you have scattered your favors to foreign gods

under every spreading tree,

and have not obeyed me,’”

declares the Lord.

“Return, faithless people,” declares the Lord, “for I am your husband. I will choose you—one from a town and two from a clan—and bring you to Zion.  Jeremiah 3:12-14 (NIV1984)
